Alcohol-Free Areas in Public Places Bylaw 2018

The Alcohol-Free Areas in Public Places Bylaw 2018 is in effect as of 2 October 2023.
Submissions on a draft Alcohol-Free Areas in Public Places Bylaw 2018 closed at 5.00pm on 5 May 2023.
Changes to the Bylaw were made following early engagement in November 2022. Council now invites feedback on the proposed amendments.
Summary of proposal
The purpose of the draft Alcohol Restrictions in Public Places Bylaw 2018 is to support a family-friendly environment by regulating consumption and to reduce the potential for alcohol related offensive behaviour and harm, and to promote and improve community health and safety.
Council is proposing the following amendments in the draft bylaw:
addition of permanent bans for Queenstown public places from 8.00am on Christmas Day to 8.00am the day after Boxing Day (27 December)
removal of alcohol bans for specified public places in Frankton, Arrowtown and Lake Hāwea
removal of the alcohol ban for Queenstown Winter Festival
adjustment of ban timings so that they all commence or end at 8.00am
updated maps
minor changes to the bylaw to improve readability and align with updates to legislation.
