Waste Management and Minimisation Bylaw - pre-engagement

Do you have ideas or insights to share that could help us develop a waste management and minimisation bylaw for the district?

Queenstown Lakes District Council has identified a need to improve the way waste is managed and minimised across the district as part of its commitment to becoming a low-waste, low-emissions, circular economy.

This includes the development of a waste management and minimisation bylaw that could address concerns with a range of known challenges, including:

• contamination of different waste streams when the incorrect material is put in a wheelie bin e.g. rubbish with recycling;
• commercial and household rubbish and recyclables being placed in or around public litter bins;
• management of commercial rubbish and recycling in our town centres
• leaving commercial or residential bins out for extended periods;
• management of waste from private roads and at multi-unit developments e.g. insufficient space to store bins, truck access, difficult to use systems that don’t promote separation of recyclables; and
• lack of adequate planning for waste management and minimisation at events held in public places or in the construction industry.

Why is a bylaw needed?

The development of a bylaw will provide a regulatory framework to better enable Council to drive its Waste Minimisation and Management Plan objectives on behalf of the district, and take enforcement action where required.
