Consultation has concluded
Feedback on a proposal to create a shared path linking Park Street to the Queenstown Town Centre is now closed.
The proposal followed community feedback on a previous proposal to provide a dedicated cycle link via Hotops Rise and a clear direction to consider alternative ways to deliver this project.
As our district grows, it’s important we can provide more options for people to get around. The proposed new path will provide a key commuter link from the Frankton Track to the centre of town.
It’s also part of a wider Active Travel Network which will provide better links for cycling, walking and even scootering right across Whakatipu.
What's proposed
The preferred option is to construct a 3.5m shared path down Coronation Drive. This option is preferred because:
it links well with the new shared path on Park Street and the Ballarat Street traffic lights
it integrates well with the Queenstown Gardens | Te Kararo Development Plan and Reserve Management Plan, and with the Town Centre Masterplan
it reduces potential conflicts between users of the Queenstown Gardens | Te Kararo
traffic is kept as two-way, and the kerb on the east of the road can remain. This means no trees need to be removed and reduces costs
it links well with other proposed future improvements in the area, including Project Manawa, a public transport interchange on Stanley Street and an upgrade to Ballarat Street. Please note, there is currently no funding for these projects. Links to more information about these projects can be found on the right hand side of this page.
The preferred option includes new landscaping, an improved intersection layout at Stanley / Park and Sydney Streets and will require the removal of 18 carparks along Coronation Drive. The drawings below show the preferred option in more detail - click on the images to open a larger file.

What was considered?
We assessed three different alignments against the following criteria:
the link with existing shared paths and cycleways
integration with the Town Centre Masterplan and Queenstown Gardens | Te Kararo Development Plan
safety of different user groups
environmental effects
technical considerations such as the presence of existing services, geotechnical risks, and flood risk, and
previous community feedback.
Other options assessed for construction of a cycleway on Coronation Drive included separated cycleways and footpaths, a cul-de-sac and on road cycle lane and converting Coronation Drive to a one-way road.
