Housing
about 5 years agoWhat do you think this Housing Strategy should include? What should QLDC’s role be?
The Council is developing a Housing Strategy together with the community, local stakeholders, businesses and the central government. We’re keen to capture any good ideas, innovations and international examples. For instance:
- partnering with Government to deliver more homes
- targeted rates
- increased densities
- incentives
- requiring land/cash contributions to be used for the development of affordable housing
MattBabout 5 years agoPlanning and design of housing areas should focus on the physical and emotional well-being of the residents.
Provision of sufficient housing stock numbers alone is not adequate. The areas formed, both new and existing, need to cater for social wellbeing and community sustainability. These urban environments need to be a healthy and interactive part of the town. If the communities aren’t successful in achieving this or allowing it, it will lead to social degradation.

Queenstown a home for a lifestyle choice, a self reliant contributing community attracting immigrants that want to live and work in Queenstown on a permanent basis. People living here for it's outstanding recreation who know and understand their part or tourism where the masses influx and impact continually until they no longer come. How does that pendulum look?

The transport issues of today are parking, traffic jams and traffic management, the issues of tomorrow are more likely to be landing points for UberAir, open space walkways, light rail or similar, driver-less cars that never need to park though will need automated fast charging etc. All planning needs to allow the private sector to develop to the needs of the future not the needs of the past and allow for some pain in between.

Climate change and sustainability
about 5 years agoIf you had $100 to spend on climate change activities, how much money would you put in each of the following areas?
- Research and education
- Prevention and protection
- Reducing Green House emissions
- Recovery from the effects of climate change
- Something else? (Please tell us what this is)
Danielabout 5 years agoClimate change and biodiversity
All of the talk so far has focused on human impacts of climate change - what about biodiversity and New Zealand's native fauna, which will also be adversely affected? Should we have more nature reserves, improved habitats and zones where no development is permitted? Areas put aside specifically for native planting will also act as a carbon sink, offsetting CO2 emissions from the population.
0 comment0MattBabout 5 years agoImprove efficiency of commuter trails.
Generally the lakes district has some great trails, though some areas are still poorly connected or have challenging obstacles like busy street crossings that restrict the efficiency of the trail network.Ideally a review of what it is like to commute between communities/subdivisions, places of work, school and recreational activity areas would highlight where these trails could be improved and therefore further encourage their use.
