Housing
about 5 years agoWhat do you think this Housing Strategy should include? What should QLDC’s role be?
The Council is developing a Housing Strategy together with the community, local stakeholders, businesses and the central government. We’re keen to capture any good ideas, innovations and international examples. For instance:
- partnering with Government to deliver more homes
- targeted rates
- increased densities
- incentives
- requiring land/cash contributions to be used for the development of affordable housing
AGCabout 5 years agoAlbert Town is really a suburb of Wanaka
Because of the proximity to Wanaka and the various connections via road and cycleways, Albert Town should have planning rules for housing that are compatible with Wanaka residential zone standards. Enabling higher densities is also reflective of the dire need for more affordable and small scale dwellings within the district. Infill housing on the larger sites, that is greater than 800m2, should be facilitated and encouraged. Large dwellings on large lots should be encouraged in the more distant locations from Wanaka, such as Hawea. Being only a 6 minute drive from down town Wanaka, Albert Town must logically be seen and planned as a dormitory suburb of Wanaka, not as a separate 'Township'.

The township zone is no longer appropriate for Albert Town. Two dwellings should be allowed on sections of 800 square metres or more, or, zoning should be the same as Wanaka residential zones thereby allowing flats or a second dwelling on a standard residential section.
