Background

We recently undertook a review of the Glenorchy Airstrip Reserve Management Plan (RMP) 2016. To help inform any future changes to this plan, we gathered insights and suggestions from airstrip users and the wider community.

Council is responsible for managing the Glenorchy Airstrip, a small aerodrome situated just south of the township of Glenorchy, on the banks of Lake Whakatipu.

The Glenorchy Airstrip Reserve Management Plan (RMP) is a document prepared under the Reserves Act 1977 outlining how Queenstown Lakes District Council will manage the airstrip for users and the Glenorchy community. The main purpose of this plan is to maintain the aerodrome to an appropriate standard for emergency and low intensity community, recreational and commercial tourism aviation activities.

The Glenorchy Airstrip RMP was adopted in 2016 and we engaged with the community in 2019 to review this plan. Since then, the use of the airstrip has changed, and a limit on flights and a noise contour have been added to the District Plan Designation that authorises the take-off and landing of all aircraft at the airstrip. A noise contour sets a maximum ‘bucket’ of noise that is allowed from use of the airstrip.

In response to these changes, we’re undertook a review of the Glenorchy Airstrip RMP to better understand the needs of users and the community, and to ensure ongoing compliance with the District Plan.
